The story of a man who was injured in a Manhattan construction accident in 2009 is not atypical of what can happen to a worker who is hurt on the job. The man was working on a building on Second Avenue when he was walking across some scaffolding; a board underneath him broke, sending him tumbling.
He happened to land on a pile of rubble and bricks, severely injuring his legs, back and foot. The then-28-year-old man suffered a compound fracture of his heel, among other injuries; he thought at the time that he might never walk again.
He didn’t know it at the time, but the man, a native of Northern Ireland, was in line for a succession of surgeries. In the four years and three months since the accident, the man has undergone three surgeries each on his back, right foot and left knee. As a result of chronic pain, he will likely need to be on pain medication for the rest of his life.
The man now has a metal plate in his right foot along with seven screws. Almost all of the cartilage in his left knee was removed. Prior to the accident, the man was very active and kept in good shape; however, his physical activity was abruptly ended after his accident.
Now, however, the man has been going to a gym and actually entering in mixed martial arts competitions. His recovery is not necessarily typical of people who are hurt in construction accidents, but it does give hope to people whose lives are changed as a result of a workplace accident.
