Residents in and around New York often utilize mass transit systems such as trains as a way to get around. For the most part, trains and buses can be a relatively safe way to travel, but if and when accidents do happen, they can be catastrophic. Too often, people are killed in fatal accidents involving a mass transit vehicle.

Recently, for example, people in Manhattan may have heard about the tragic death of a man who was working on a construction project on some Metro-North railroad tracks. The trains were rerouted and were not supposed to travel on the tracks during the construction project, but a possible miscommunication resulted in the worker getting hit by a train and killed.

Early reports indicate that the 52-year-old man was working on the tracks to build a new stop on the line. The track that was under construction ran parallel to three other tracks, two of which were in service at the time. Somehow, a miscommunication reportedly took place and the traffic controller for the rails started to change signals that allowed trains to ride on the tracks that were under construction.

The man was hit and killed by a train that should never have been on the tracks in the first place. A full investigation has been launched to determine what exactly contributed to the accident.

In accidents that are similar in nature to this one, it is crucial that the contributing factors are identified. In too many cases, a person is killed because of the negligence or recklessness of another party. Figuring out what caused a fatal accident is the first step in holding that person or people accountable for the tragic and wrongful death of a loved one.
